AWWWW MY GAAAAAAAD!

I thought it would be a while until H&M did a collaboration with a designer that would get me all giddy after the Lanvin one (we wont bring the Chrissy Kane/Topshop into this. That was just next level excitement.) And also one that would be good enough to redeem itself Versace for H&M (The only thing that saved that garish, overly tacky collection was Joe McKenna's styling for the campaigns as he did what only a don could do, and made that pile of tack look good.)

ANYWHO.

So the next collection is Marni. Which I think is FUCKING AWESOME! (I've also read that Versace are down to do a S/S collab with H&M next year and have seen pictures. Not too sure if it is fo' real but if so...H&M your bashing them out pretty fast now no??)
I find that the H&M collabzZz are quite hit and miss. I do think that the majority have been grotesque and totez not worth the price tag (While I thought the Lanvin collection was beautiful, I heard the quality wasnt so...)
I am so excited about this as it's such a cool brand with it's no advertising, sleek shilouettes and the brands amazing play with texture and print. It will be interesting to see how they interpret this whole idea of making high fashion 'more affordable' and blurring the line between high end and high street.

So whilst browsing the net for some birthday treats I came across a deliciously desirable designer by the name of Natalie Anne Moran.

I have mentioned this all before and I'm pretty tired and have a stupid essay to write so im'a cut this one short.

I styled her new lookbook. I LOVE LOVE the stuff because its fun and can be used as casual and dress pieces.

My fave pieces are the white and gold netted dress, the coloured shorts and jeans as well as the jumpsuit.

I had a lot of fun styling this and working with Natalie and it it also my first piece of independent proper styling work OoOoOooooH!!

Two weeks ago yesterday I'm pretty sure if I died I'd have died a very happy little mocha bear.

Two weeks ago yesterday I went to go see Chrissy Kane in action at the Covent Garden Apple store talking about his life and work.

Two weeks ago yesterday, I could have just been hormonal and definitely a little bit of a sad bastard, but I genuinely thought I was going to burst out crying when the little scotsman came on stage and that was without having to sit at his S/S 12 show.

Two weeks ago yesterday I was remembered by the man himself after his talk for asking real dork questions (chuffed...chuffed...)

The talk was hosted by Paula Reed from Grazia magazine who was asking Christopher questions, I was astounded at how humble and so so soooooo sweet he was. He talked of his inspirations which seem to subconsciously stem from his childhood (and no. I'm not just referring to the jelly bags inspired by pencil cases. He said that the embroidery from S/S 12 were inspired by the stickers people stick on their diary. I think it's safe to say that if he were to design diaries and notebooks they would be worth doing derogative thangs fo'.) Also I remember reading that his love of neon comes from watching his older sister tammy getting ready to go out when he was younger. (I'll stop now as I'm just being a dweeb.)

There was mentions of his relationship with Donetella Versace, he discribes her as infectious and magnetic and mentioned how she thinks he should act more like a diva and she's also compared him to her late brother Gianni. Which is something of a complement and touching. I was surprised that he only goes to Milan for one week out of the month for the Versus collection, it doesn't seem like a lot of time. I would have expected him to be jetting there a few times every other week or so.

We all know he's London's golden boy when it comes to LFW, he's never EVER EVER had a bad review. Which is something that is really unheard of so when asked about his so far stellar career and reviews it was nice to see that he hasn't let all of it go to his head and he felt like every good review brought more pressure, which maybe the thing that drives him each season to do better?

I find his career astounding and almost fairytale like (no less deserved.) straight from day one from his MA show he has been loved and welcomed by the fashion pack and celebrated every season. Having people like Donetella and queen ~~bitch~~ bee Anna Wintour behind him so early on in his career. He is one of the most talented and talked about designers and he hasn't even been around for fucking ten years yet, I seriously seriously hope for two things from this man. One sooner rather than later. In fact I scrap that. I ask for three thangs. Two of them being rather than later.

One: Another collaboration with Topshop.

Two: A cheaper more affordable range to be created and released (like an Alexander Wang T kind of brand.)

Three: A retrospective kind of book (Like Carine Roitfeld's Irreverent, which I purchased at the weekend. UH-MAZING. INVESTMENT FOREVURRRR.)

You've stolen my heart Christopher Kane with your always on point, beyond desirable, pretty much worth doing dirty, horrible things for clothing and the way you just keep it real. And one day your gonna love me too.

I am feeling real blessed at the moment.

While my university attendance is below fifty percent and my education is slowly going down the drain, my experience working within industry is the opposite.

For all my readers that didn't know, I am being trained up to be a stylist assistant and am second assistant to Madeleine Ostlie (seamlessfashion) and Celestine Cooney (www.celestinecooney.com) who is the Fashion Director of Twin Magazine and does loads of other amazing cool shit, some of which i've already had the pleasure of experiencing and helping out on.

Both women are amazing and I couldn't ask for better bosses.

Apart from helping out both women (yesterday Maddie sent me along to go play stylist on a music video she was working on which was real cool to see how everything was put together and stuff, amazing as we have a video project later on during second year.) I have been lucky enough to score my own piece of freelance styling work through the jobs I have assisted on previously.

Also I received an email a couple of days ago about working stylists Anna Hughes-Chamberlain and Joseph Kocharian who are working freelance and for the photographer Rankin's new magazine.

The name of Rankin's new publication is called Hunger Magazine and it launches of the 17th of next Month. The video promoting the magazine says its for the 'culturally and visually hungry' (You can see the promo vid if you click here.)

I start working with Joseph and Anna next week, just for the week full on doing a mixture of shoots, commercial work and pulling clothes until I start in November.

I am so excited to have the opportunity to work on not only a new magazine but also on a magazine which is founded by such a respected photographer, who's work I've admired for years, it's going to be a lot of fun and I canny wait to have a little taster next week and also meet Anna and Joseph!

Kanye West: Going H.A.M or 808 heartbreak?

Now I know I've missed the window of making a real big fuss over fashion week and blah, but I wanted to blog about the Kanye West collection as there is still talk over it.

I remember reading about the possibility of him doing a collection but didn't believe it until helping out my boss on a lookbook shoot and the hair stylist had the Kanye West show on his fashion week schedule, then I read somewhere he had Katie Eary on board to help him design and that Karla Otto were doing his pr (the latter is true, not too sure about the Katie Eary part.)

Anyway it got me thinking about what his collection would be like, I have to say I was very excited and curious to see what he'd come out with. Not because I thought his collection would be uber but I also didn't really think it would be too bad. Why?

Well I didn't think it would be amazing simply because he was refused onto the CSM design course by Louise Wilson (Proving that while you might have friends in high places and because you have interned with some of the best like Fendi and have cash money, it dont mean JACK.)

But I didn't think it would be bad because Kanye does have style, so even though he wouldn't have sat there and designed the clothes, he would know what works and what doesn't, also. Man got deep pockets so you assume he's gonna pull together some badass, uber design dream team.

When it actually came to the show, the use of only top models and the celebs and respected fashion industry insiders couldn't disguise that the show was a bit naff and was a bit too Balmain inspired. I personally feel the collection is a bit heavy and felt a little cheap. I was left a little disappointed. I think people were 50/50, some expected great things and others thought it would be complete shit.

I don't want to sit here and get all critical and sassy over Mr West. I'm not sure how much influence he has or how involved he actually is with his label, but I feel there could be potential. He knows what he likes, and while he wants to break away from the 'celebrity designer' label and doesn't want to be classed as a 'Hip Hop designer' he should just put that aside and instead of rushing, putting on a full on catwalk show and over 20 looks and creating too much hype. He should have started doing a capsule collection and slowly developed that, he should have put in time, which I think would take a few seasons to develop staple or signature pieces and shapes, progressing each season and gradually getting bigger as for now I'm not quite sure who his brand is for and what kind of woman it's supposed to be representing.

He might be worried about the celebrity designer label, but I personally think the only ones who have truly managed to shake off that label and deserve not to be branded with the title are the Olsen Twins as that is what they have turned there complete focus too.

Just give it time Mr West rather than jumping in at the deep end. You might have great personal style but that doesn't automatically mean your going to be the best thang thats happened to fashion straight away.

It takes practise and development of personal style, not completely and obviously taking inspiration from other designers. It's trial and error, I think that while your first collection was mainly a dud (I did actually enjoy the first two looks.) I hope that next season is an improvement and you prove your haters wrong, as I think it would be cool to cement the relationship between music and fashion further (I'd rather it be Kanye that Gaga, I would genuinely rather be skinned alive and put in a bath of salt and left to shrivel up and die, like when you pour salt over a slug.)

Till next season Kanye, lets not let down Carine and Anna.

It's been an unsettled few weeks. I've managed to settle in, in my new pad in London while fitting it round all the assisting I was doing, which was pretty hectic as it was around the lead up to London Fashion Week.

After London Fashion Week came the challenge of getting my ass to Kent three times a week to UCA to attempt to get back into the swing of studies.

It's not been easy for me, even though I'm now entering my third week in. Not because of being thrown straight into our project AND a contextual studies essay (on Modernism/PostModernism. Thank the lord for the V&A exhibition, I have a feeling there about to make a lot of money off of me as I imagine many visits to help me with my essay.)

The problem has been my time management and fitting my uni work round my interning. Uniwork round my interning? Sounds naughty right, as much as my degree will look fancy on paper I'm not really learning that much stuff which is relevant or going to help me be a good assistant. When it comes to prepping a shoot or calling in looks, finding the contact for Miu Miu or the PRagency and a person who deals with Mary Katrantzou. They seem to feel that throwing you a project and aiming your image at a magazine is going to get you a job at the end, as well making it so academic and that in a way just makes it so off putting and boring.

BUT ANYWAY. My time management I've done a few thaaangs in the first couple of weeks being back at uni, which has ment my attendance is already suffering (I'd rather it not anymore. My year heads a total babe and if I am to get into debt let's at least make it worthwhile no?)

It's been hard for me to prioritise what is more important out of the two.

I dont want to start fucking up in the first few weeks back, but I feel I learn more from who I work for on set, in the way you are to behave as well as just learn all the assistant jobs and see how they style andwhat there trademarks are.

One of the jobs I've helped out on a styling job for Marina and the Diamonds, which involved me taking on the role of first styling assistant for the job. This ment I requested the looks Celestine wanted and chased them. Celestine is Marina's stylist sometimes and was doing her up for an awards ceremony at the Roundhouse theatre last thursday. Hurr is a picture of one of the looks she wore:

I dont really keep up with music as a whole so I don't listen to Marina's music, or keep up with what she wears. Maddie and Celestine said she's had a change of style and wanted to go really feminine and retro and very old Hollywood style. Hence the soft colour pallete that was usedwhen picking out her looks. Consisting of pastel hues, mainly pastel and dusty pinks as well as nudes.

Apart from assisting on a couple of jobs we got our first project brief since being back. A styling brief, a paired project. It seems quite a fun thing to get us back into uni, it's a lot more hardcore than our last one which was one image compared with the now 6 to 8 we must create plus a covershot.

Im paired with my flatmate Becky. Becky makes me happy, not only cause secretly she is a naughty influence or the fact we love the game, facebook rape Tom on pretty much on a day to day basis or snuggle watching TOWIE and Made in Chelsea. But because she's always so happy and positive and because she's totez gonna be a good inspiration for me to get this project done.(Take yesterday when she decided not to have a seedy night out at Joiners to do work. This made me feel naughty so we went home and did work.)

Apart from assisting I also had a meet up with a designer I came across on a clothing site I was checking out for my day of birth presents. Her name is Natalie Anne Moran. I am going to style her second lookbook, which I cannot wait to do. Her clothes are just really cool and laid back, nothing too fussy. She's really into textiles and there was an AMAZING jumper from her first collection that had fabric appliqued onto it. The outfit which stood out the most was the Warrior skort and tee. I loved how boxy the top was and how the sleeves had been, the little tuck at the bottom of the shirt works nicely to create shape rather that leaving the whole front surface of the top flat.

Today marks my two weeks in living in London. I have to say its been a very eventful, fun and sometimes hard and tiring two weeks but so amazing.

I've been flown to Scotland to assist on a menswear look book for an up and coming designerZander Xhou in a castle, which was a lot of fun and involved exploring a forest on the last night and getting in an hour before we had to be up to catch our flight home. Also I got to assist my new boss laydee celestine on a job she was doing for the retail shop Warehouse the day before we flew to scotland, which involved pulling looks for the christmas campaign which was shot on themonday just gone which I also got to help out on. Apart from that I did a brief stint at Lulu & Co, which was interesting as it was more production than styling, it was a lot more intern work thanwhat I've been recently doing but such an amazing thing to have and I have to give props for them having me and the amazing Madeleine for sorting me out with it (you can check her blog hurr: seamlessfashion.blogspot.com)

I also got to assist Madeleine and Celestine out on the Ashish show during LFW and that was aBIIIIIIG highlight for me as I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Ashish's stuff and I definitely was a big dork and told him how much I love his stuff. Here are some of the pictures I took backstage of the clothes:

I've been really looking forward to this month, what with getting back to uni (not so much uni but seeing my buddies.) and moving to London. Summer seems to have gone quite fast. It doesn't seem like I've had like three months away from uni.

This week has/will be an exciting one for me. I am moving to London in two days and will be assisting on a Warehouse campaign or lookbook shoot and getting paid, which is an added bonus!! (What to buy!?! Jeremy Scott x Adidas Flintstone trainers or a H.O.H crochet print dress??) as well as starting at Fashion East next monday and let us not forget fashions big night out AND fashion week >.<

Yesterday I assisted on another cover shoot for Dazed and Confused with an up and coming actress, I cant wait to put up all the pictures I took as she was SO beautiful and looked amazing in every picture that was taken by Rankin. She looked so amazing in a white McQueen dress from the A/W collection, she seriously looked like something from the Black Swan and like Natalie Portman, which makes me fancy this actress even more as I LOVE natalie portman. Spesh with no hair in V for Vendetta...

Apart from having a really cool exciting day I also had an email about being taken on properly as a 2nd assistant which is fucking awesome, I guess it's still needs to be sorted out, I cant wait to start learning more about styling and just learn all the necessary skills to move up to becoming a 1st assistant and add to the little book of contacts.

I am looking forward to, without wanting to make you all vomit over your laptop screens. A new chapter and throwing myself into my work and just trying to get myself out there and learn as much as I can. I am also looking forward to decorating my room!! I have managed to condense my clothing to four vacuum bags so far and havent even started on my beloved magazine collection/shoes/accessories. Looking through the folder of pictures I've picked to print for my room I have noticed there is a noticeable theme consisting of Freja Beha Erichsen and Pussy. My boudoir is seriously going to look like a pussy parlour...

Although a large majority of the time I dress like an absolute tramp and love to purposely wear clothes that clash and choose to pair items together that look stupid. But as a matter of fact I do actually have relatively expensive taste, taste which I can't actually afford but am so deluded that I still like to think that I can and eventually will have the things which I want, and I think that I will have all of them pretty much at once.

Most people will invest and would be grateful for one thing that they invest in that is normally out of there price range. I am, but I am never really completely satisfied. I basically am on to the next new object that I've seen to fantasise about and lust after, as well as still longing after the other 100 billion things that I want. I have compiled some images of the things which I am drooling over the most at the moment.

Avoiding my uni summer project like the fucking plague and attempting to do anything else and everything in my power to do so, I thought I'll just snoop through some of my regular blogs as I havent really been keeping properly up to date recently, what with friends leaving for uni (SO sore I wont be a fresher anymore.) and sorting out my house/job/just my life in general.

There are three thaaaangs which I wanted to write about/inform all 'yall asses about.

Numero un:

PRADA/SHAPARELLI EXHIBITION

The Metropolitan museum in New York is to house an exhibition honouring two of the most influential female designers in fashion to date. Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli, both women alike (not just cause there both Italiano.) but their works decades apart. Elsa Schiaparelli was Coco Chanel's biggest rival and was the first designer to put together a catwalk show, as well as collaborate with artists like surrealist Salvador Dali (the infamous Lobster dress. This designer and artist relationship is something that I would consider very influential and forward thinking as it is something that has continued with designers today such as Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton. Steven Sprouse for S/S 07 and with Takashi Murakami on bags) Where as Miuccia has her own art museum and incorporates art into her clothing.

The exhibition will open next May with the Met ball happening at the same time. Im sure the exhibition will be a great hit. I for one am interested to see pictures of the set up and how they lay and present everything after the pictures that emerged from the Alexander McQueen 'Savage Beauty' exhibition. Deffs jel and need to get my ass to America if I can get the moulin as I am pretty sure that this exhibition will have a major impact on catwalks for 2013/14 from the Italian powerhouse that is Prada and designer Schiaparelli.

A.WANG X SALLY HANSEN NAIL VARNISHES

Alexander Wang is teaming up with Sally Hensen to create nail polishes that will make their debut in the S/S 12 collections. I cant wait to see the colour choices that are available and they are DEFINITELY going to sell out as soon as they hit the shelves on some next Chanel level. I think that this is a really cool move for Wang to make as even though he has his more affordable 'T' by Alexander Wang range I think that him doing a beauty line or just dipping in will be a major success, not only because thats where luxury labels make a large sum of their money from I think that it will be very popular with young laydeez.

GARAGE MAGAZINE

Former editor of POP Magazine, owner of an art museum and fiancee to Roman Abromovitch Dasha Zhukova is to release her own magazine thats launch is to coincide with New York Fashion Week (comes out pon di 5th of September.) The name of the magazine is 'Garage' is named after her art museum the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture. Three covers have been revealed. The brief was to come up with designs that could be tattooed onto a living canvas. One cover was shot by Nick Knight which features a puppet doll version of Lily Donaldson wearing Marc Jacobs and Mary Katrantzou, and the other done my Damien Hurst which features the bottom half of a woman with a butterfly sticker you can peel off which reveals a butterfly tattoo on her vajayjay (tasteful. NART! I'd have at least gone for a flower just for humorous reasons.) The Damien Herst cover has been banned from W.H Smiths. Contributors for the magazine include Shala Monroque, Tavi, Jurgen Teller amongst others. The magazine is an art and fashion magazine (I imagine something like POP, which she was the editor for but way more out there and avant garde.) Bitch gonna be having the creme de la creme of fashionZzZz and art AND photography all clambering to work on her magazine and for this reason alone all I have to say is I am buying more than one fucking copy of this bad boy even if it does have some HEFTY price tag and I am totally getting the Lily Donaldson cover as well as the Damien Herst one. Abstract photography is a method of creating an image using colors and pattern with the absence of its true meaning and clear subject. Using a slow shutter speed to shoot car speeding fast will give you an abstract image. One of the tricks of creating an abstract image when using the shutter of camera is to crop tightly. Make your object a blur image.

Creating a perfect shot requires an intelligent mind. The true artist must know how to be a technician also for photography is not only an art of form but of technical knowledge.

Never mind that I was using slide film (Fuji Provia 400). I would have the option of leaving them in color or converting them to black and white abstract photographs after I scanned them. I shot away and took about six images of the leaves from different angles.

This is actually a common, and yes, cliched, form of abstract photography – take close-up pictures of leaves, flowers and other natural objects and, where appropriate, convert the image to black and white.

But, as one of my photography friends once remarked, even cliches have value if they are well-executed

I went to London for an interview on Thursday to get an internship with Fashion East/Lulu & Co, the interview which I got through the lovely Madeleine who has been hooking me up all summer. The offices are situated in the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. Its pretty cool as you have to go up a cute little steel spiral staircase to get the the office.

When I got to the office it was really small but in a nice, cosy, intimate way, when I was being interviewed by a girl named Emily who seemed real nice she told me I will be working for Lulu & Co and will get to do bits of sewing and fabric sourcing and stuff.

Lulu & Co is set up by the founder of Fashion East, Lulu Kennedy. Lulu is responsible for helping launch the careers of people like Gareth Pugh, Katy Eary, James Long and Simone Rocha and is all about supporting up and coming designers and is a real respected and influential figure with in the industry and spesh in British Fashion, Fashion East turned 10 years old last year and Lulu & Co was set up in celebration of Fashion East reaching the 10 year mark.

Emily told me that Lulu & Co work with about 7 designers and they are designers that have worked previously with Fashion East (like Christopher Shannon and House of Holland.) and produce 3 collections. I was offered an internship there and I'm pretty excited to start as I think it will be fun to get back into sewing as I haven't touched a sewing machine since I left college, Im a bit nervous about it. I think its gonna be really cool though as Im gonna be picking up new skills like fabric sourcing which I think is gonna be SOOOO much fun. They want me to start on the 8th when I move to London full time till the day before LFW starts which means its gonna be HARDCORE and then I can carry on working on my two days off from uni in the week, but I cant WAIT to just be back in London and to be busy again. I've felt almost a little lost not commuting back and forth between London and Coventry at least twice a week >.<

DANSK Magazine A/W 11: A place in the sun

Since I bumped into Madeleine stomping around on Charlotte Street two months ago she's done nothing but try and help a brother out. She had me helping out on some pretty cool shit and has been such an angel and still is <3

One of the shoots I helped her out on was for DANSK A/W 11, she is first assistant to the fashion director Toby Grimditch. It was the second shoot I'd helped her out on, it was also the first time I put my ridiculously poor steaming skills at use (Madeleine is an absolute pro and makes it look dead easy, which sometimes it is but the job is quite deceiving. I detest attempting to steam all around the armhole of a shirt. Its absolute bollocks if its even lamer if its really creased.) Madeleine told me that you should steam clothes even if there not creased as it makes them look so much better pon camera. Anywhoo.

The shoot was right next door to the Haggerston overground station in a studio/flat belonging to a woman with the BEST cat ever (his name was Rufus and he is a diva cat, I say divas he's modeled in a jewellery catalogue and has a poster made after him.)

As the clothes poured in from various PR's I got to hang up and cream over the delights that I was sorting out. Chrissy Kane (one love.), Giles Deacon (nom nom.), Miu Miu (lLlLlLOVE), Jil Sander (Those hobbleskirts with the peplum are SOOOOOO heavy! but amaze) and various other designers whilst I was on set I has to steam and also do pick up and returns and just generally help on set. The shoot started off being inspired by the late Elizabeth Taylor and then it snowballed from there. Madeleine told me that Toby's style was a mixture of sportswear and nostalgic clothing, and I did love the more sporty clothing pieces he had picked out. There were a pair of bottoms (featured in the last picture at the bottom of the post.) I think they were jersey, they looked soooo comfy and nice.

The jewellery that arrived for the shoot was amazing also, some of it arrived with its very own bodyguard from Harrods or something. He had to stay for during the shoot until we were done with the jewellery. But over all it was a fun day with a fun soundtrack of Sasha Fierce and The Knife and when I was flicking through my DANSK today I saw the shoot and had to put it on here and just have a shout out to Madeleine who was kind enough to let me come on a shoot with her and Toby for crediting meas junior fashion assistant on the shoot :)

Virgine Magazine

About a month or so ago when I was interning and waiting for some clothes to be delivered I spent my time doing what I usually do just traipsing the titnernet pon blogs and reading magazines and just generally being lame. But I came across a spread for a new magazine coming out called Virgine Magazine.

The spread I saw wasn't that impressive it was based on celebrity icons, which to me is rather boring and a bit cliche as a similar thing was done by American Vogue in their November issue back in 2001 (zZzZzZzZzZzZz.) Also I just didn't really understand it or see any relevancy. It's not like any of the people they had chosen to personify were being celebrated for any reason, theres no major buzz around them AND it was a mixture of musical artists (Are Mickey J= Michael Jackson, David Bowie, The Beatles, Grace Jones, Patti Smith and I am going to throw a guess at one blondie supposed to be Kurt Cobain.) to actors (Marlon Brando, Marylin Monroe, Audrey Hepburn) and then cartoon characters (AKA: Betty Boop. I am literally like what the fuck.) I thought some of the photography was nice, I liked the blurry, smudgy-ness to the David Bowie portrait but I did not rate the styling much at all and just really don't get the spread. I just kind of find it pointless and see it as a way they thought of filling pages cause they couldn't think of something better to put in without trying to sound to bitchy.

BUT ANYWAY. Always straying from my point or what I set out to write about. I bought the magazine anyway. I thought there could be content to salvage that stupid spread (and plus I am a fashion magazine junkie and I thought "hmmm first issue = possible collectors item = cash mahoneys if I think its that shit.)

So I bought the magazine I liked the cover (cover girl for the first issue is Heather Marks.) she's dressed all in white, which will tie in with the magazine being called Virgine as virgin represents purity, innocence and being untouched, colour wise white represents this. The font is nice, clean and bold, I liked the fact it was gold as it stood out more and I felt popped out more against the black back ground. I also liked the feel of it, its not a glossy I really like the fact its got a matte cover and the paper inside the magazines pretty nice too.

The letter by the Editor in Chief (photographer Ryan Yoon) basically explains the meaning of the word virgin and what he thinks it stands for (which is it being a new beginning.) and then leads on about how the magazine he hopes will show a new dimension to the industry. The thing I found interesting and very sweet was the fact that the publication want to encourage charity work and donations, and that they will put a charity advertisement as their first page of advertising in every issue. Which is interesting as that page is normally a page which a label pays a hell of a lot of money for to be advertised on. There was another thing that got my attention in the letter, there was a bit where Yoon had written they wanted to break the barriers within the industry and that I kind of have a bit of a mixed reaction to:

"Lastly VIRGINE wants to innovate by forming bridges between different industries. Imagine an article written by a fashion model who wants to become an editor or an interview written by the actual photographer who shot the subject. This is the kind of content we are looking for."

Now I dont want to piss on anyones parade but babes. There are models who already do interviews and are editors. Anja rubik has her own magazine and forgive me if my memory doesn't serve me correctly but im sure Karen Elson did an interview with Ricardo Tisci in issue 9 of Lula. We hear of stylists are now trying designing (Formichetti for Mugler, Mad Mens stylist doing a line for Banana Republic.) Designers becoming photographers (Keizer Karl oh. And lets not forget he is an editor of his own magazine and shoots his own campaigns and styles.) celebrities and other industry insiders contributing in ways to other magazines in the way they desire, whether thats writing about up and coming talent etc.

I think the idea Yoon has of breaking down the barriers in the industry and the idea of getting rid of " It's all about who you know in the fashion industry" is a nice one and I would never want to be pessimistic about that view as I think its wonderful someone is trying to crack that, as me being a student trying to get in industry can be hard. But I feel if thats what he wants to achieve he needs to be working with people like myself, students, the future of the industry and the people who are up and coming not people who are established and fancy a career change.

RANT OVER.

Now I'll actually talk about the magazine. It covers art, fashion and music. There are interviews with artist John Baldessari, Photographer Michael James O'Brien and musicians Glass Candy (whom I love.) to name a few. I read a few of the articles but I just couldn't keep to them. I found them a little boring and just felt the questions in some of them were a bit simple there was no point behind the questions as in like a kind of the story/picture you try to create asking the questions. I couldn't see what point the people who wrote the questions were trying to get at. They were questions like "when were you first discovered for modeling?" and yeah there cool but where are you gonna go from that?

But I dont want to just criticise and come across like a proper negative nancy cause I think some of the stuff that this magazine want to do is really cool. Plus there were a couple of things I did really like. There was an interview with designer Azzedine Alaia which I thought was really cool, I really like the fact that the designer is fearless and will just come out with the fact he dont like Karl Lagerfeld or Anna Wintour and they dont like him. Two big heavyweights (like himself.) but I just thought it was genius as a lot of people probably wouldn't do that and he did it with such grace as well. I thought the editorial that went with it was lovely. The back and white images were so strong and I like 'em that much that I'm totez gonna print them off to frame and stick on my bedroom wall when I'm pimping out my new room.

There was another editorial which was quite cool. It was all about joining fashion and art photography together, it was called 'All you can get' Hurr is the spread:

I dont know if its just me over thinking and attempting to be clever but my first thoughts were about pop culture with things such as coca cola and i-pads being featured and then the idea of mass consumption as it's all excessive. But who knows. Probz just me being a twat attempting to be clever. Anywhoo, I look forward to seeing content from the second issue just to see how it has developed from the first as the people working on it are probably just figuring out what they want and dont want in the magazine and are just finding there feet.

French Vogue Aug 2011

When it comes to Conde Nast and it's vast variety of Vogues in my eyes French and Italian piss all over the rest (and Vogue Nippon do some pretty cool shit but it's just way out of my price range as its like £13 for a monthly.)

I find that British Vogue is not that consistant (in my opinion anyways.) I find the content normally is lacking and the shoots aren't all that inspiring to me (although the last two issues I have found them enjoyable and deffs marked down a lot of pages when it came to the editorials.) As for American Vogue, Anna you might be the don and I know celebs sell, but I dont want Gaga or SJP pon mi covers. Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole are bad enough. ANYWAY. Yeah. Back to what I was supposed to be blogging about. I pretty much LOVES French and Italian Vogue. Why? Because visually they draw me in more, theres so much more imagery, fuck the fact I cant read the text. The publications have the best and most respected and influential photographers and stylists working for them.

Now the stylists, the stylists/styling is the subject of my post, I apologize for my ramblings. Now earlier this year saw the departure of Carine Roitfeld as French Vogues Editor in Chief and saw Fashion Director Emmanuelle Alt step up to the plate as the new editor. Now I am a big big fan of Carine's Work pre French Vogue and during her time there, the work she did when she was a freelance stylist is just as cool. Her style is very sexed up and parisienne and your guaranteed nip action a lot of the time, but I like how she puts her own twist on things and how she takes risks like using unknown faces (AKA: Saskia De Brauw, who was spotted by Ricardo Tisci and put on Roitfeld's last issue, now the bitch shooed Abbey Lee from her spot as the Versace campaign girl for A/W. Nice one Carine...nice one.)

So when it came to her departure and someone filling in her place I think it was always going to be hard as she was so daring and controversial at times (Roitfeld's Dec 2010 issue using child models caused outrage and lets not forget the Andre J cover FIERCE!) When it came out that Emmanuelle Alt was to take over, reading blogs the main questions seemed to be what impact Alt would have on the magazine, and how she would put her mark on French Vogue.

I was eager to see as her style is very different from Carine's, it is more relaxed, effortless and rock n' roll (She was the stylist for Isabel Marant and Balmain before taking on her role as editor in chief...) So when I got her first issue as editor, looking at the editorials I was rather disappointed with hers it was in my eyes too predictable as she had picked out clothes from designers she used to work with and I felt it reflected her own personal style too much. Second mistake was the choice of outfit for her debut cover. Alt had picked out a Dolce & Gabbana that had already been featured on eight covers on less respected and less profiled magazines. For me her editorials didn't get much better and in her last issue I thought the only thing that saved the issue was the shoot Joe McKenna did, it made me think that it wasn't a complete waste of my money.

But this August issue I was surprised, I saw images created by Alt that I really liked. The one that really stood out for me was her first one out of the 64 page spread that was put together by her self and other respected stylists Melanie Ward and Suzanne Kelleret, was of Freja in Chanel A/W photographed in black and white with a little motley crew in tow. I feel her styling stood out the most and was the most consistent when it came to the amount of strong, well styled images. The only thing is that the styling was still just a little too reflective of her own, and Freja is an obvious choice for a rock and roll look, with her being compared to looking like Jim Morrison with her androgynous looks and her boy like body. But it seems Emmanuelle Alt is maybe feeling a bit more confident and slightly coming into her own a little bit.

I think my first opinion of her when she first took over was a little too quickly formed and irrational. I didn't stand back and think about the fact she had to take on the role after someone so influential and someone who had been at the helm of the magazine for ten years previous and who had been responsible for its turn around and becoming the influential publication it is today. Hopefully this will progress continue and Alt will eventually become more confident and continue to smash out images like the ones in this months Vogue over time.

Kipling X Jean-Charles de Castelbajac

My first memory of Kipling bags is from school, my friend Katie and her momma had a few of them. I think her mum collected them (she now collects these crazy vintage perfumes that comes with cat figurines. They're dead cool.) I thought the little Monkey charms were really cool but I never really thought the bags themselves were anything real special (no offence to Katie or Sally, luffs ya both.) But I feel the brand has come on quite a bit since 6/7 years ago with the brand starting collaborations with fashion designers, which started 3 years ago. The most infamous one being the most recent collaboration with Peter Pilloto which has lasted two seasons both Autumn/Winter 10 and Summer/Spring 11. But this Autumn/Winter sees Kipling bringing in a new designer, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac who is known for his bright, fun clothing which usually is influenced by pop references (art,music and just pop culture in general.)

As soon as I heard about it I couldn't help but literally "OOOOOOOOH!" out loud thinking of his past collections influenced by the likes of Micky Mouse and sending out pure sequined dresses with my main man Mickey sprawled across and garments on the JC/DC site which featured the characters from South Park emblazoned on them. I knew this was gonna be something interesting.

The collection can be split into capsule collections. There are four:

Game ever:

The pieces featured in Game Ever are black with sections of block colours, but only primary colours. This gives a pop art feel and is typical Jean Charles de Castelbajac

Psycho Daisy:

Psycho Daisy features print which is inspired by the japanese three wise monkeys and their saying: "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." The print is rather eye catching with all the neon colours.

Nylon Club:

This collection is my least favourite, inspired by English hunting wear the bags are quilting and can come in nylon or leather. I feel that these bags dont really correlate with the rest of the collection and also are a bit tacky with the JC/DC logo rather large on one of the bags. (Im not saying logo's are bad and I suppose if you wear a label you kind of want people to know, but there is subtlety...)

Candy Say:

This is my FAVE collection. I find it so fun and a bit child like and pop arty, but the bags are fabulous and I really really need not one but two of these bags in my life. I love how bright the colours are. My favourites is the polka dotted bag and the bag with the space monkey on (I LOVE ITTT!!)

The highlight of the Versace men’s show at Milan Men’s Fashion Week yesterday was not the striped booty shorts or pink suits, it was Donatella — but isn’t she always the highlight, in a way? — taking her bow at the end wearing a Versace for H&M dress. Versace is the next big-name designer doing a line for the affordable chain, even though Donatella said in 2008 that she respects designers who do these lines but didn’t want to do one herself “because I work very hard to put the Versace line in the luxury section.I think to put the Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand.” Perhaps to avoid confusion, H&M is billing the line as an “Iconic Collection.” Goes great with whatever deal she presumably struck to have the CFDA’s 2011 Fashion Icon, Lady Gaga, wear only Versace for the next couple of months.

H&M has not released any specific information on pricing, but that studded leather dress will not be H&M cheap. Versace cheap maybe, but not H&M cheap. so, who’s excited? At first glance Lady Gaga's bright pink feather-like hairstyle certainly catches the eye.

But it's what's going on under her jacket that is of real interest.

The singer appeared to be completely naked as she stepped out yesterday in Copenhagen.
After listening to “Poker Face” one too many times this weekend, I started thinking about Lady Gaga. And then I started Googling Lady Gaga. And then I became obsessed. Of course, being outrageous is the singer’s schtick, but does she ever tone it down? According to my Googling, not really.

Naturally stars dress ridiculously for the attention and to establish a persona. Furthermore, one person’s ridiculous is another person’s sense of style. However, even the most flashy artists are usually seen dressed like the average earthling every once in a while and I was determined to find these less unbelievable outfits of Lady Gaga.

You might believe that Lady Gaga’s meat dress is probably her top outrageous fashion statement. Well, close for some, far for others. Recently, she showed up in a dress made of a material most guys would dislike on a woman’s body. That’s right, she had a dress made out of hair.

When she showed up in a New York club wearing nothing but a cape made of hair and some fishnet tights, it made for some shocking news in the media. She confessed that sometimes she feels as insecure as any 24 years old girl. But then, she added she uses self encouragement for morale. “You’re Lady Gaga, get up and walk the walk!”, she says to herself.

Last night was the second night of Summer Sonic 2009 in Tokyo, Japan. There were a lot of great bands, but the act with the biggest hype was not the listed headliners Linkin Park or The Specials – not even close. The real star last night was Lady Gaga, or just “Gaga” as she’s known to her Japanese fans. Gaga’s dedicated fans started pushing their way to the front of the Sonic Stage several bands – and many hours – before Lady Gaga was scheduled to appear.
That’s right, there wasn’t just one Lady Gaga at her Tokyo gig – everywhere you looked, there were Japanese versions of Lady Gaga in brightly colored costumes, makeup, and of course hair bows. It was truly amazing.

Calvin Klein Models

The problem is > it has been my dealings with women that put me in this predicament in the first place. So you can see why I might be reluctant to acknowledge even the most enticing offer.

If you whack a dog every time it comes to the trough, it will eventually stop coming, even tho it's hungry, and enjoys food.

There have been other, similar comments, tho probably too risqué to publish. Another girl mentioned that I look like I'd lost weight.

When life throws us a curve, some people respond by eating. I'm just the opposite. My appetite vanishes. When I finally do get hungry, two bites fill me up (stomach in knots). Consequently, I tend to drop weight during periods of stress.

I also exercise more (in an attempt to process those feelings of angst). My bike rides around the Back Bay have worked wonders in this area > therapy in motion. Gorgeous surroundings. Fresh air. Sunshine.

I most enjoy watching egrets in flight. Takes me away from my problems for a few poetic minutes. Almost makes me wanna cry.

I also tend to drink a lot of protein when stressed, cuz it's one of the few things I can easily stomach. So that tends to cut me up a little.

For fans of the French crocodile, Lacoste has launched a rather snappy website this month, one for us design fans to really sink our teeth into... Okay that's enough of the jokes, so let's be serious and take a look at www.lacostered.com.

Designed and developed by Parisian firm Megalo(s), the site launches the new Lacoste Red Collection. The creative direction is based on a campaign by celebrity photographer Terry Richardson and features a soundtrack by Yuksek. Lacoste Red is Lacoste's junior collection and is aimed at 15-25 year olds.

So seeing as I love attention to detail more than I love a cold beer on a sunny day, I was quite impressed with the loading screen. These things, in my opinion, quite often let a site down because they are left to the last moment, build no sense of anticipation and never fully integrate with the content. It's a bit like going to a posh restaurant and being confronted with a lavatory and accessories from Builders Warehouse - it does the job, but doesn't quite cut the design mustard. Lacoste have gone for an unapologetic full screen clock, music, a couple of zooming bikers and the option for low or high bandwidth (a big tick for those of us that live in South Africa).
So on into the menu. Sadly the music here is softer and a bit less interesting, but select a style and bam! you're back to the good stuff. Strong typography and another fab loading sequence which employs a sense of eighties computer games. This was as far as I got because it stuck at 100%. Big sigh.

Men may require a shot or three to confidently sport the thigh-revealing shorts seen on runways throughout the week. Models at Narciso Rodriguez showed more than a little skin with their black and gray garb, causing the fug girls wonder if the designer was pulling their legs. Perry Ellis redefined "tighty whiteys," pairing his crisp interpretation of the trend with a button-down sweater. And it's a good thing Lacoste lads play a lot of tennis — they'll need it to get in shape for the brand's bright new bottoms.

So it's not long since the news that Amy Winehouse is dead came out. Now I am and I'm not a fan of hers (this will have something to do with the fact that my mum thinking she's like Amy Winehouse/her best mate and literally KILLING her Frank album.) But I think its devastating as she was just someone who genuinely needed real help and to be surrounded by people that could take better care of her, she was someone who had such an amazing voice and has made such an impact on music.

I thought I'd do a little post as I just started to ponder over what effect her death will have on fashion as she was considered in some ways a bit of an icon (even Kiezer Karl thought so at one point comparing her to Bardot and used her as inspiration for his pre fall A/W 08 collection.) and she did have a line of shirts with Fred Perry.

I know this whole nostalgic feel from the S/S collections is being carried through to A/W with a lingering touch of 70's and 60's is coming back in but I wonder if it will continue and effect S/S 12 and if maybe some people will look at her for inspo or something with her using Dusty Springfield as her inspiration and her mod like style and ridiculously big hair that would rival Ru-Paul and his girls (wigs he calls them girls in his book >.<) With the news I thought I'd pick out some of what I would consider her nicer outfit choices.

I'm in love with Freja (tbf that's no real surprise I am like some form of serial secret perv or something.) and I'm pretty jel of those big bushy eyebrows Arizona Muse has got going on (WERKIN IT.) So when I was doing my rounds on the blogs I read, one had a post about how these two might be going on all Usher lovers and friends, and how someone had created a Tumblr about their rumoured relationshio so you KNOW I had to check this shit out. It is actually hilarious. Who ever created the tumblr basically uses pictures of them and comes up with captions for them. Heres a couple of ma favez:

I just want to state that there is only one Pussy Wagon, and it is not from Kill Bill. It resides in Coventry, the C.O.V, City of Villains and belongs to a Miss F.K Taylor. So dont front/h8/imitate.

I realise these are ridiculous and people might class as immature and stupid and can be a little offensive. But all in jest eh? I don't think its meant to be malicious in any way, but if the rumours are true and they are really playing with each other's tupences all I have to say is I take my hat off to Freja, Irina Lazareanu twas just bwaaad, lotta hawt notches on your bed postie...

Two months l8r....

It's been quite a while since I last wrote on here. I have to say I was pretty much hating on my education and resenting what I was doing at the time and was losing interest and doubting my chosen choice of studies and career path.

I started an internship with Tank magazine at the beginning of June, it kind of started off a little promising with my picture being taken on the first day for intern outfit of the week, them being seemingly impressed with me being speedy doing my jobs, on my second day doing returns stomping down Totters Court road I was stopped by a woman asking about my Tatty crownsies. We got talking it turned out her name was Madeleine and she was a stylist wanting hair accessories for a shoot she was doing the next day. I was all like:

"oOoOoOoh I wanna be a stylist too!" and I asked if she ever needed an assistant. She said I could assist her on her shoot the next day.

(Turns out it was for Augusts issue of Nylon magazine and was a hair story done by Alex Brownsell of Bleach salon.)

So I went and helped out Madeleine the next day. It was pretty fucking cool. I probberz did more stuff relevant to what I want to do than on any other placement I've ever done, as well as it being 10x more interesting than picking up clothes (which is all I have pretty much done on all three of my other placements, you/I get its part of your duties as an intern but they are your worst nightmare and very tedious.)

I had to go and pick up stuff from Henry Hollands studio (which is uber cute and kitch.) and to Jurgen Tellers agent. She also asked if I could take some shoes back to Matt Irwin, who is some awesomez photographer who has shot for i-D and Russian Vogue to name a few....so I was pretty much dribbling (and not from my mouth. JOKES!) Anywhoo. Since helping out on that day I left Tank at the end of my first week after spending £150 one weeks worth of travel (around London and commuting from Surrey.) I have assisted Madeleine a few times now, I helped out on a shoot for Dansk magazine, which was really cool and met the fashion director called Toby who seemed real lovely.

Madeleine said his style was quite nostalgic but he always liked to mix in a bit of sportswear (the shoot started off based on Elizabeth Taylor and then progressed onto something more.) Also she introduced me to the fashion director of Twin Magazine, Celestine Cooney who Madeleine herself assists. Celestine is really cool, she's a bit of tomboy and always looks real stylish but effortless. She says she's almost like a lezza or compared to being one by people in industry with her being quite boisterous. I've waited for clothes to be dropped off for shoots at Celestines crib, a job which can come with real cool benefits, one being that I can try on clothes that come in (so what if I was sad enough to take pictures of me posing in Givenchy menswear. WUUUUUT!?!?) But because of one time of waiting for clothes, for a Dazed & Confused shoot Celestine was doing meant that I got a phone call to help out on the shoot that Saturday. It turned out it wasn't just any shoot but a cover shot by none other than Rankin which lead me to cat leap around my front room and jump on my mama. Celestine shot an actor from Mexico called Gael Garcia Bernal, who has been in a film based on Che Guevera called the motorcycle diaries (I'm not going to lie. I've never watched it. Maybe one day.)

The shoot was at Rankin's studio. I'm not going to lie for the majority of the time I was there I steamed and hung up clothes, but it wasn't really the point. I still enjoyed it. I spent the day in a creative environment, around people working in industry and actually realised this is seriously what I want to do. It was nice to have been asked to come on the shoot and assist on it just because I waited for the clothes, I can't say thats ever happened to me before! It's just real cool that these women want to give me a chance and help me out as it kind of seems when you work for publications you don't really matter a lot of the time.

I have to say it did go all a bit Pete Tong last week. I was waiting for clothes for a shoot that Celestine was doing for her magazine Twin in New York (with some bad hottie model Yuri Pleskun.) I thought I was just waiting for clothes, when in fact I was supposed to be chasing clothes. Now when you chase clothes you need to have P.R agencies numbers and the specific P.R's name/email and possibly there direct number who are in charge of the labels you require to chase the brand/s that you have requested and the brands they have confirmed. It ended up that we were chasing clothes when neither me, Celestine or Adam (who also helps out Madeleine and Celestine from time to time) had the contacts for them, Madeleine did but was on a flight to N.Y.C at the time. No one was angry and it wasn't really anyones fault. But speaking to Celestine she said I now need to start keeping these P.R agents/agencies details in a book to contact as it's what makes you invaluable to a magazine or a stylist your assisting.

It's so weird. Within the past month I've done so much, assisting on shoots...almost getting sent to mens paris fashion week (still kills me now.)

I feel like that I'm learning so much more now out of uni about styling that I ever did in uni. I've got some really good advice about what to do, and I've decided that if the right opportunity arrises then I will leave my course as I don't want to have to take an extra 7/8 years from the time im 20/21 when I leave uni to establish myself in my career path.

If New York is the Big Apple, then Toronto is a smaller sized plum at best. The self-proclaimed center of Canada is often compared to the universally-elected center of the universe, but as Steve Martin declared in an episode of 30 Rock, ”Toronto is just like New York but without all the stuff.” This was evident at Toronto’s 10th incarnation of its very own homegrown Fashion Week, this time sporting the clunky official title “LG Fashion Week Beauty by L’Oreal.” This year’s theme of “Show Love” was pleasantly optimistic, if not predictably Canadian in its unabashed sentimentality, and the overwrought use of pink and red hearts as the major aesthetic motif was a little much for a celebration of high fashion.

But I digress. Fashion Week, whether it’s in Toronto or New York, is about the clothes, and in this arena the designers did little to disappoint.

The sillage is pleasant, a bit fresh-sporty and transparent but just candy-sweet enough, reminding me of orange blossom, but with a beachy, breezy attitude. On the whole, it's a very, very good, young and sexy mall scent, and I can see why it's extraordinarily popular. The sex appeal of Juicy Couture is up there in my mind with the Giorgio Beverly Hills brand and also of Gale and Fred Hayman fragrances; it's bound to be another new cult classic along the lines of Giorgio Beverly Hills of the '80s but with a lighter feel. It's on the synthetic side, but if it were more gourmand-sweet, it could almost be Vera Wang Princess. Please stay tuned for my review of Juicy Couture Couture Couture (2009), coming soon.

The Brooks Brothers top grade pure cotton dress shirts are simply awesome. We are tired of ironing our shirts five days a week. Many manufacturers claim ‘non-iron’ but in truth don’t come close to the crispness and cleaness of the ‘Miracle’ Shirt. No special washer and dryer needed, use the normal tumble dry cycle and it comes out wrinkle free. These shirts may cost a slight premium compared to other shirts, but the fact you won’t have to take them to the dry cleaners to look their best will quickly offset the price.
